The assignment of Stephen Longstreth and William Houston Longstreth as brothers is somewhat tentative. However, the timing of births is consistent, and the repetion of given names within the two families is consistent witha closer relationship than distant cousins. Also the census records from 1840-1880 for Indiana County and Armstrong County, PA suggest this relationship is solid, and they are both the children of John Longstreth and Feraby?      John Longstreth was born in 1791 at Ireland; supposedly an Irish Catholic.1 He married Faraby (?) before 1846.1
John Longstreth appeared on the census of 1830 at Wheatfield Township, Indiana, Pennsylvania; Located by Jim Longstreth. Male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 30-40: 1 female 5-10 and 1 female 30-40.3 He appeared on the census of 1840 at Brush Valley Township, Indiana, Pennsylvania; Located by Jim Longstreth. John Longstreach (sic), is not listed in the count. Assumption is Stephen, William and Feraby are listed along with an unknown female. One male between 10-15, one male between 15-20, a female between 15-20 (?), female between 40-50.4 John Longstreth and Feraby (Worth?) have been identified as the parents of both
William Houston Longstreth and Stephen Longstreth, primarily by coincidence in time and geography. There are no other
candidate "Longstreths" in the census records of Indiana and Armstrong Counties to even be considered as alternative
choices for parents. Using a similar line of "coincidental" reasoning, James Longstreth and Barbara George are the only
available candidates (as of Feb. 2004) to be found in the database or the census records to be candidate parents for John
Longstreth, of John and Feraby. If they were his parents, then a Stephen Longstreth (spouse of Christianna) was his brother.
This fits with all the known information for Longstreths in Indiana Co, PA, even though these items by themselves are not
proof positive. Barry Brown has uncovered court records that there were a set of brothers in Indiana Co, John and Steven
Longstreth who had as parents James and Barbara (George) Longstreth. They were born at the right times, and lived in
Indiana Co, from about 1800 on. In 1860, John and Feraby were living a few doors from the family of Stephen Longstreth
and Nancy Adams; in the 1870 census John Longstreth, now a widower, was living with the family of William Houston
Longstreth and Mary Winebrenner. The strong coincidences and associations in time and location are the basis for the
assignment of John, to be the father of both William and Stephen, to be the same John that is son of James Longstreth and
Barbara George. [JA Longstreth, Feb 2004]2 He and Faraby (?) appeared on the census of 1850 at Pine Township, Armstrong, Pennsylvania; Census record located by James Longstreth Feburary 2004.5 John Longstreth and Faraby (?) appeared on the census of 1860 at Madison Township, Armstrong, Pennsylvania; Located by Jim Longstreth. He was removed to his home and received the best of medical attention, and for a time his friends were hopeful of his recovery but in the evening of Friday last a blood clot formed, causing instant death. About twenty-five years ago he was united in marriage with Miss Vesta Stevens, of Newmansville, who with their six children survive him, as follows. Mrs. Oscar Adams, of Oklahoma, and William, Harry, Hazel, Inez and Lulu, at home. Also by his aged mother, Mrs. Mary Longstreth, of Nebraska, and four brothers, John, of New Alexandria, Peter W., of East Pittsburg, Steven Worth, of Oakdale, and Orlando, of Newmansville; also by two sisters, Mrs. Orris Walters, of Newmansville, and Mrs. Burt Carbaugh, of Colville, Wash.
