Kathryn Mae (Buckwalter) Hoover, age 100, formerly of Parkesburg and Shunk, PA died at Landis Homes, Lititz on the morning of July 18, 2011. She was born May 3, 1911 in Leacock Township, Lancaster County, the daughter of Henry and Naomi (Kreider) Buckwalter. After the death of her father and subsequent remarriage of her mother, Sem Eby became her step-father.

In addition to homemaking she worked intermittently as a telephone operator in Intercourse, Atglen, Gap, Parkesburg, West Chester and Embreeville State Hospital. After 30 years of farming near Parkesburg she and her husband moved to Sullivan County where she served as a KOA camp manager.

Involvement in the community was a big part of Mae's life. She was a PTA "Mom" and president, member of the Octorara School Board, coordinator for the Fresh Air Program and chair for the Chester County Migrant Ministry.

Mae participated in various expressions of congregational life including teaching Sunday school and Bible school and was deeply committed to the broader Church and its outreach. Many persons were supported by her faithful prayer ministry. She was a member of Wheelerville Mennonite Church, now Faith Mountain Fellowship, and after moving to Landis Homes in 2001 became a member of the Landis Homes Fellowship.

She is survived by four children: Naomi H., wife of Duane Kauffman of Perkasie, Edwin L., husband of Edith (Bradley) of Parkesburg, Ada M. Kassa of Andover, NJ., and Norman V. and companion Beth Liner of Oxford, NC; ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother Ira J. Buckwalter, step-brothers Warren Eby and John Eby, and step-sisters Edna (Eby) Rohrer and Verna (Eby) Kreider.

A viewing will be held on Friday, July 22, from 1 to 2 PM, at Landis Homes Chapel, 1001 E. Oregon Rd., Lititz, followed by her funeral service at 2 PM, with Rev. Henry Buckwalter officiating. Interment will follow in the Groffdale Mennonite Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Mae's memory may be made to Landis Homes Caring Fund, 1001 E. Oregon Rd., Lititz, PA 17543.

     John Anderson Brookfield was born on 23 February 1792 at Rahway, Middlesex, New Jersey.1,2 He died on 2 October 1815 at Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, at age 23. Note: He served in the War of 1812 in an American privateer and was captured by the British and kept prisoner until the end of hostilities. He later became captain of a merchant vessel, PLANET, engaged in the coastal trade abetween New York and the West Indies. He was supposed to have been lost at sea off Cape Hatteras before the outbreak of the Civil War.1 He married Jane Butler on 28 February 1833 at New Bern, Craven, North Carolina.3,4 John Anderson Brookfield died on 12 January 1854 at North Carolina at age 61. Sea Captain John Anderson Brookfield perished when his schooner, "The Planet" went down off the coast of North Carolina near Cape Hatteras. He was a 1/3 owner with Edward R. Stanly of New Bern, North Carolina owning the balance.

His wife was Jane Butler of North Carolina. She passed away during the New Bern Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1864.
