in Company L, First Regiment, NJ vols was wounded by a musket ball from the enemy
in the chest on 6th day of May AD 1864 at the Battle of Spotsvania, in the state of
Virginia, and died of said wound on the same day; that at time of his death he was in
the service of the United States, and at the time he received his musket wound he was
in the line of his duty. I also certify I was the Captain in command of the company,
duly commissioned as such, under whom he served at the time aforsaid; and that this

Also two others, Peter Vanpelt 18, and Harriet Moley.9 He was a wheelwright on 1 August 1860 at Franklin Township, Somerset, New Jersey.10 He and Sarah E Urnes appeared on the census of 1 August 1860 at Franklin Township, Somerset, New Jersey.1 Lewis D Hughes began military service on 9 September 1861 at Trenton, New Jersey, and served as a Sergeant in Company L, commanded by Captain
William H. Hick in the 1st Regiment of Calvary, NJ volunteers. He was first mustered
in as a wagoner on Sept 9, 1861. On the muster roll for Company L, May and June
1864 he is reported as killed May 5, 1864 at Todd's Tavern.x.4 He witnessed Pension date, unit 1st Calvary as a sergent. on 27 June 1864.11

Her pension application states she is 34 years old in Sept 1866, which would make her birth year 1832.1 She married Lewis D Hughes, son of David Hughes and Mary VanDalsen, on 31 December 1851 at Reformed Dutch Church, Three Mile Run, Middlesex, New Jersey.1,5,6,4,7
     As of 1851, Sarah E Urnes was also known as Sarah Wines.8 As of circa 1855,her married name was Hughes.1 She and Lewis D Hughes appeared on the census of 1 August 1860 at Franklin Township, Somerset, New Jersey.1 Sarah E Urnes witnessed Sarah began receiving her pension from her husband's service. She received $8. per month.
Her witnesses were Lewis Applegate, New Brunswick, & John DeHart, New Brunswick on 6 May 1864.5 She witnessed Sarah requested an increase of her pension from $8. to $14. on this document on 14 September 1866.9

     Shirley Applegate was born on 1 October 1916 at Milltown, New Jersey.2 She married George F Brown, son of George M Brown and Elizabeth Gourly?, after 1940.1 Shirley Brown died on 23 November 2016 at Roosevelt Care Center, Edison, New Jersey, at age 100; Shirley L. (Applegate) Brown, 100, died Wednesday, November 23, 2016 at Roosevelt Care Center, Edison. Born in Milltown she lived there and in Gulf Breeze, FL from 1973 - 1981, then returned to Milltown. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Milltown. Mrs. Brown was a former charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter 317, Gulf Breeze, FL; former member of O.E.S., Allah Chapter 211, Milltown and currently a member of O.E.S., Ruth Chapter 12, Milltown. She was also a member of HI-12 Auxiliary and the Milltown Senior Citizens Club. Her husband, George F. Brown died in 1992. She was also predeceased by her brother, Neil J. Applegate and her sister-in-law, Mary Applegate. Surviving are her son, Neil K. Brown and his wife, Dorothy of Milltown; 1 granddaughter, Pamela Brown Murvay and her husband, Karl of Milltown; 2 great-grandchildren, Lauren Murvay and Nicholas Murvay; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Private services are under the direction of the Quackenboss Funeral Home, New Brunswick.

Dorothy V. Everett Fairbanks, 88, of Blairsville died Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at Indiana Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Fairbanks was born July 17, 1916 in Blairsville, daughter of James M. and Amanda Cousins Everett. She lived her entire life in Blairsville where she was a member of Hebron Lutheran Church and Eastern Star 166.
Survivors include four children, Robert G. and wife Joy, Carl D. and Mrs. Roger (Nancy) Bergman, all of Blairsville, and Mrs. Michael (Mary Jane) Kernen, Lakeland, Fla; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Glenn O. in 1992; granddaughter Amy Fairbanks; her brothers James and Meade; her sisters Florence Weir and Barbara Lightbody.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday in Hebron Lutheran Church, Blairsville, Rev. Karen L. Taylor officiating. Interment will be in Blairsville Cemetery.
