A 35-year-old Downingtown man drowned in the North East River yesterday after he dove from a small boat to take a swim.
Pronounced dead on arrival at Union Hospital, Elkton, Md., was Allen E. Walton of 12 King St.
According to Maryland Marine Police at Annapolis, Mr. Walton an a companion, Daniel Mooney of Glenmoore, were riding in Walton's boat just off the McDaniel Yacht Basin in the North East River, the northernmost tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. Apparently Mr. Walton decided to take a swim and dove overboard with a floatable-type seat cushion.
Mooney, who remained in the boat, noticed that only the cushion surfaced, authorities said, and swung the boat around in an effort to locate Walton.
His body was recovered yesterday afternoon by rescue workers from Charlestown, Md., Fire Co.
Mooney and Mr. Walton both employees of Pepperidge Farms in Downingtown, were off for a day of fishing on the bay.
The husband of Mary Zell Walton, Mr. Walton was born in West Chester the son of Earl A. and Ada Todd Walton, now of Stuart Ave., Downingtown.
A Marine Corps veteran of the Korean Conflict he is survived by also by two daughters, Elaine and Nancy Marie, both at home.
