John Andrew Harter was born on 7 June 1823 at Centre, Pennsylvania.1,2 He married Eve Elizabeth Smith before 1846.1 John Andrew Harter married Susan Arbogast after 1862.3 John Andrew Harter died on 25 November 1900 at Marion Township, Centre, Pennsylvania, at age 77. His obituary: Andrew Harter Dead - He Was One of the Most Highly Respected Citizens of Nittany Valley: On Sunday afternoon about 2 o'clock Andrew Harter, an aged and highly respected citizen, died at his home about four miles east of Bellefonte, where he owned one of the finest farms in Nittany Valley. He had been ill for six or seven weeks with typhoid fever which finally affected his heart, causing his death. Mr.Harter was 71 (sic 77) years of age last June and a well-preserved man. Most of his life was spent as a tiller of the soil and he was recognized as one of the most practical farmers of the county. He was a home-loving man and his greatest delight was to see his family happy. He was industrious and frugal and thus had many friends. He was a member of the Methodist church and lived an upright, Christian life, enjoying the confidence of all who knew him. His first wife was Miss Eva Smith, she preceding him to the grave many years ago, leaving him with a family of eight children. His second wife was Miss Susan Armagast (sic, Arbogast) of Snyder county, PA, who survives him. By his second wife he had ten children, or eighteen in all, and all of whom are living. The children are Susan of Collinsville, John of Clintondale, Ellen of Chicago, Jennie of Milton, William of Eagleville, Emma of Houseville, Jacob, Laura, Clem, and Harry of Axe Mann, Belle of Pleasant Gap, Elizabeth of Bellefonte, Samuel of Elkhart, IN, and George, Albert, Cora and Edna at home. (Note, son Franklin not named). The funeral took place Wednesday morning at 9:30 from his late residence. The services were conducted by Rev. White of Pleasant Gap and Rev. Bair of Howard. Interment at Jacksonville.
