Alice Lucy Luce was born on 29 June 1914 at Waterford, Saratoga, New York.1 She married William H Rand Jr, son of William Henry Rand and Anna E Duncan, in 1937 at New Jersey.1 Alice Lucy Luce died on 23 December 2011 at Fellowship Village, Basking Ridge, Somerset, New Jersey, at age 97; Published in Star-Ledger, Newark, Essex, NJ, January 1, 2012:
Alice Luce Rand, 97, died on Dec. 23, 2011, at Fellowship Village, Basking Ridge, N.J., after a brief illness. Interment took place in the Rahway Cemetery. A memorial service will be held on Jan. 7, 2012, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Rahway, N.J.
Alice was born on June 29, 1914, in Waterford, N.Y., one day after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, the incident that started World War I. She was the second daughter of George Ewer Luce and Violet Crapo, both New Englanders. Her father was an engineer who set up and operated knitting mills. As the mills began to close and move south, the family moved first to North Adams, Mass., and then to South Berwick, Maine, before moving to Rahway in 1931. Alice lived in Rahway for 76 years before moving to Fellowship Village four years ago.
She was a graduate of Rahway High School, Class of 1932; attended Glassboro State Teachers College, and worked at Merck until her marriage to William H. Rand in 1937. Her husband, who was president of Tingley Rubber Corporation, was very active in civic affairs in Rahway, and predeceased her in 1980. Alice was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Rahway for over 70 years, serving as a deacon, elder, trustee, and president of the women's association. She was a member of the Colonia Country Club, the Rebecca Cornell Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of New Jersey.
