Verna Mae Kellenberger was born on 19 August 1925 at Bird-in-Hand, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.1 She married Charles Meryl Murphy, son of William Wentz Murphy and Mary Elizabeth McMichael, on 14 August 1945.2,3 Verna Mae Kellenberger died on 16 April 2014 at Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Quarryville, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, at age 88Her obituary: Verna Mae Murphy, 88, of the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community and formerly Drumore where she served as Postmaster for over 31 years, entered into rest on Wednesday, April 16, 2014. Born in Bird-in-Hand, she was the daughter of the late Enos and Bertha (Petery) Kellenberger. Her husband, C. Meryl Murphy died in 1994.
Verna Mae led an active life, after graduating high school she worked as a secretary for the Manheim Twp. school district. In later years she, along with her husband owned and operated the Fishing Creek and Peach Bottom Marina’s from 1951 to 1969 and then went on to serve as the Postmaster of the Drumore post office.
She was a member of Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church, Soroptimist International, Kings Daughters, NAPUS, Valley Lea Riding Club and Wilmar Hunting Club. Verna Mae loved all water activities along with reading, knitting, sending cards and wintering in Florida.
She is survived by sons; Charles M. husband of Sandy of Willow Street, Stephen L. husband of Susan of Drumore, Michael M. husband of Candace of Drumore and daughter Christine M. wife of Mike Robinson of Downingtown along with 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Services celebrating Verna Mae’s life will be on Monday, April 21, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. from Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church, 1068 Chestnut Level Road, Quarryville, PA. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service and also immediately following. Interment will be private.
