Mrs. Mary E. Shupe, 84, is Oldest Member of Group

The Morris family held its 23rd annual reunion at Lacona Park Sunday. It was the first time the clan had convened at Lacona. Mercer Morris, with his wife and six children, moved from Owen county, Indiana, to Warren county, Iowa, in the fall of 1854, traveling by team and covered wagon and settled in Squaw township where he entered 160 acres of government land. He lived on this farm until his death June 6, 1884.

This family was represented at the reunion by four daughters. The eldest, Mrs. Mary E. Shupe, now 84 years of age, has been a resident of Lacona for the last 53 years and has lived in the same residence. Mrs. Amanda Butler of Indianola and Mrs. Sarah Goodrich of Osceola, the Morris twins, 74 years of age, were the first twins born in Squaw township. Mrs. Anna Pierce of Egan, SD, the youngest of the family, is 71 years old.

The Morris family consisted of eleven children, seven daughters and four sons. This family is noted for longevity. The great-grandmother of these four Morris sisters lived to be 104. Their grandmother, Catherine Wetzel Taylor (first cousin to Lewis Wetzel) lacked a few months of reaching her centennial year. Their own mother, Elizabeth Taylor Morris, passed her 96th year. The first death in the family among the children was that of Mrs. Belle Bryson of Indianola.

The four sisters who attended the reunion have survived their husbands, brothers and brothers-in-law. Their ages total 304 years. in 1936.

Elizabeth Taylor was born on 6 September 1825 at Lancaster, Pennsylvania.3,2 She married Mercer Morris, son of William Godfrey Morris and Nancy Young, on 19 December 1843 at Lafayette Township, Owen, Indiana.4 Elizabeth Morris died on 20 March 1922 at at home of daughter Sarah Goodrich, Osceola, Clarke, Iowa, at age 96. Her obituary read:; OBITUARY-ELIZABETH MORRIS

Elizabeth Morris, daughter of John and Catherine Taylor, was born Sept. 6, 1825, in Lancaster county, PA, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Goodrich of Osceola, IA, March 20, 1922. She was 96 years, six months and 14 days old at the time of her death. She came to Ohio with her parents in the early days, then moved to Owen county, Indiana, where she grew to womanhood and was married to Mercer Morris Dec. 19, 1843. The bride and groom rode horseback 70 miles to the home of the groom's parents for the reception in Shelby county, IN. On returning to Owen county, they settled on government land near her parents' home, clearing the land and cutting the trees to build their log cabin to live in. On hearing the reports of the west they left on Nov, 1, 1854 in a covered wagon with six small children for Iowa. They crossed the Mississippi River at Keokuk in a steam boat and had many hardships on their journey. They were caught in a blizzard on what was then called the Green Plain of Illinois, and had to lay by for three and one-half days. The man where they stopped had built a new house, and it was full of travelers, but he offered them his old log cabin with a stove in it. They got some grass and stopped the cracks to keep the snow out. When they left the snow was still drifting and was hub deep in places. They landed in Warren count Nov. 27, 1854, and entered their homestead of 160 acres in Squaw township near Cool. They made a new home of logs with one room where Mrs. Morris and her husband remained until his death on June 6, 1884.
To this union were born 11 children: four, Bell, Will, James and Joseph, preceded their mother. Seven children are still living: J.T. Morris of New Virginia; Mrs. Kate Curtis of Knoxville; Mrs. Ellen Shupe of Soda Springs, ID; Jennie Bass, Shelbyville, IN; Sarah Goodrich of Osceola; Manda Butler, Indianola; Anna Pierce, Flandrean, SD. All were present at the funeral but Mrs. Kate Curtis and Mrs. Ellen Shupe.

Grandma Morris remained on the old homestead until a few years ago when her health failed. Since then she made her home with her children. She united with the Free Will Baptist church with her husband in early life and remained a firm believer in the Master until death. Her last word to her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Goodrich, who was at her bedside when the end came, was good-bye. Besides her children, she leaves 55 grandchildren, 76 great-grandchildren, and 30 great-great grandchildren to mourn her death.2
She was buried on 23 March 1922 at Indian Valley Cemetery, Indianola, Warren, Iowa.2 Elizabeth Taylor Find-a-Grave.com ID # 26750598 + family links and obituary.
