An East Lampeter Township man died and his father is in critical condition after an all-terrain vehicle accident over the weekend in Juniata County.

Michael Hurst, 29, was killed in the accident.

His father, Donald Hurst, 51, of Leola, is hospitalized at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

The accident happened early Sunday morning, during a family trip to a cabin in Thompsontown, which is northwest of Harrisburg.

Michael Hurst, and his wife, Brandi, had taken their sons, Rolan, 2 months old, and Kason, 2 years old, to the cabin, which is owned by Brandi Hurst's father and uncles.

Brandi Hurst's parents, Wanda and Brian Gregg, and Mike Hurst's parents, Donald and Rebecca Hurst, were along for the weekend trip.

"We were having fun," Wanda Gregg said Tuesday. "We were taking turns riding the four-wheeler. We were sitting around a fire."

Michael Hurst got on the ATV, with his father as a passenger, and the two men headed up a nearby trail. When they did not return, family members went looking for them, Wanda Gregg said.

State police in Lewistown are investigating the accident, which happened sometime between 12:30 and 2 a.m. in a wooded area off Route 333.

Michael Hurst worked for T-Mobile for about six years, and was manager of the Mechanicsburg store, his mother-in-law said.

Born in Lancaster, he was a 2000 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School, where he played football and his wife was a cheerleader.

The two were high school sweethearts and had liked each other since elementary school, Wanda Gregg said.

After high school, Hurst attended Full Sail University in Winter Park, Fla., but then returned to Lancaster County.

He enjoyed football and photography.

But his main love was his family, Wanda Gregg said.

"He loved them, and he loved those boys," she said. "He had such enthusiasm for life."
