Following a few days' illness, Mrs. M. L. Hawthorne passed away Monday evening, August 22, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. E. Ferguson, in the beautiful manner of one who had lived more than 86 years, many of those years devoted to unselfish service for others. The passing came as she slept with countenance unruffled and sweet as a little child asleep. Funeral services were held at the Ferguson home Wednesday forenoon, Rev. Chas. Oberg, of Portland, a former pastor of Mrs. Hawthorne, officiating. M. D. Odell also assisted in the service and the W. R. C. had their part in the service. While we know that the family will feel keenly loneliness because she has gone we realize that to few are given the opportunities afforded by many years' association with one whose life must ever prove a benediction and in this and like thoughts they will find consolation.

Mrs. Hawthorne's Funeral Yesterday
Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Lupher Hawthorne, 86 years old, native of Pennsylvania, who had resided in Oregon since 1883, were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. E. Ferguson, of Odell, where death occurred Monday afternoon, yesterday morning at 10 o'clock. Interment followed at Idlewilde cemetery. Rev. Harold Oberg, formerly pastor of the Methodist church at Astoria, attended by Mrs. Hawthorne for a number of years, came here from Portland to preach the funeral sermon. He was assisted in the services by M. D. Odell.
Mrs. Hawthorne was born April 28, 1835, at Canat near Franklin, Penn. Her father's name was Jacob Luper, and her mother was Martha Hill. On February 24, 1864, she was married to Samuel Allen Hawthorne. The family arrived in Oregon, settling in Astoria March 7, 1883. Mrs. Hawthorne moved here in 1911. She was the mother of four children, two of whom, Mrs. Ferguson and M. Hawthorne, both of Odell, survive. She leaves two grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Mrs. Hawthorne was a lifelong member of the Methodist church, having joined at Lupher Chapel, established by her father near the old home, while a young girl. Her father was with Commodore Perry on Lake Michigan. He raised his family on a federal land grant of 640 acres in Pennsylvania. The original tract remains in the hands of the family.
Mrs. Hawthorne belonged to patriotic organizations of three wars. She was active in war work during her young womanhood at the time of the Civil war. During the Spanish American was she was a member of the Oregon Emergency Corps. She was a member of the Red Cross during the great war. Mrs. Hawthorne was a member of the Woman's Relief Corps, and members of Canby Corps yesterday participated in ritualistic funeral services.
