Born in Roaring Spring, Blair County, she was the daughter of the late Levis S. and Annie (Brumbaugh) Rhodes. Margaret's husband of 45 years, J. Landis Herr, died in 2004. She was the youngest of five siblings: Mary, George, Esther, Elvin, and Paul, all of whom predeceased her.
A 1928 graduate of Morrison Cove Vocational High School, Margaret also graduated from the State Teachers College at Millersville in 1944 and began a 17-year career in Lampeter-Strasburg School District as an elementary teacher. Upon completing her Master's Degree from Penn State in 1956, Margaret taught special education and pioneered the first life skills class in Lancaster County. She also assisted her husband, Landis, who was the tax collector for West Lampeter Twp. from 1956-1965.
Margaret was a member of the Lancaster Church of the Brethren, where she taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and served as Librarian. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Lampeter Fire Company. Margaret enjoyed singing and playing the piano in a family quartet at church events, traveling the US with Landis and making crafts and special gifts for friends and family.
Margaret loved spending time with her numerous surviving nieces and nephews and their families.
A Viewing will be held 10-11 AM, followed by the funeral at 11 AM on Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz, PA. Chaplain J. Mark Tedford will officiate. Interment will be in Mellinger Mennonite Cemetery. His obituary reads: P.C. Fair, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas Walker, 1520 Orr Avenue, Kittanning at 5 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 1935 following an illness with bronchial pneumonia. Mr. fair was 88 years, five months and five days and is survived by the following; his wife Delilah (Lasher) Fair; the following children, Mrs. Charles Fair of Kittanning, Mrs. N. W. Cloak, of Cowansville, Mrs. Thomas Hays, of Rochester, Pa. Mrs. Thomas Walker of Kittanning, Mrs. J. H. Gearhart of Tarentum, Mrs. Frances Quigley, of Rochester, Pa. Fourteen grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, two sisters Mrs. Ada Christman, of Adrian, and Mrs. Luida Hawkins, of Alliance, O., and one brother Augustus Fair, of Adrian also survive. Short service will be held at the Walker home at 10 o'clock Eastern Standard Time Friday, July 12, and immediately following the cortege will leave for St. Mark's Lutheran church, Adrian, where further services will be held. Burial will be made in the cemetery adjoining the church.
